Zakka Patchwork Please! Sew Along 2.0 .... Its been swell

Hey there!
Hello for tuning into my little blog post today...

All things Zakka...
a year ago I had no idea what Zakka was... never heard of it..in fact..had never made a quilt before from any type of pattern until last year when I participated in a sew along for the first time.

I know you will be interested once you check out the kind of projects that are being made and shared on Flickr. So, Pop on over to Lindsey at LRStitched .... the flickr group is HERE  to find out all the details. I do have to say though..you MUST complete the item for that week to be eligible for the prizes for one lucky SAL member a week...yes! PRIZES! woot woot!

You don't have to make all the projects. I've picked and chosen..so far..im ahead by a week or two..only because of a vacation coming up..best to be prepared. Though, this year I wont have the time to make the quilts so I'll be off from the SAL a week a piece for those. Too bad I know..

I am in love...

All of my photos from the Zakka Style sew along last year can be found right here on my flickr
So, anyhoot...
Back on track..
This year we are sewing threw the Patwork Please! by Ayumi Takahashi and the projects are  much different than last year..
Tea Cozy and Tea Pouch
I had a lot of fun with the paper peicing of the words. I had never done that before. I had trouble with the color choices. I had recently been involved in a charm swap and really wanted to cut into a few. I don't own a tea kettle but, this would make a good gift for someone I know that enjoys tea.
Children's apple Bib
My husband and I do not yet have children. I actually even debated on making an adult sized bib so I could use it. No joke :) I decided I can stash this away for a few years.
Place Mat
This is currently being used as my mouse pad/Under my laptop  riser mat.. It is working out pretty well.
This was the first time I had ever used linen..100% linen that is. I always bought blends because..well..they are cheaper and I can't afford a bunch of money for fabric with a trip coming up!
Dino Hat
Again, no children but, I know of a boy that may like this hat. Whom has an eccentric personality for animals and creatures..but, don't tell the criminals that are after him (har har) or his invisible friend.

BLD Towels
Self explanatory..Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner
"Tea Towels" I wanted bright fun colors.
With the help of photo editing the colors are brighter
but, they are lovely and bright. The patchwork was fun.

Apron
My cafe apron..I adore it..its sill on my wire mani stand.
I am savoring the beauty in it. Its lovely.

Our first concert! Mumford and Sons

We have been together for 4 years and married for 3 years this past April. We have never been to a concert. Tonight, we are at our first concert! At the Rose Garden in Portland,Oregon. We both fell in Iove with the band well, me first.. And it seems to be the one CD we both know lyrics to. When the tickets went on sale my husband bought a set. We waited 2 months and here we are!
We are high up in the 300 row. Where we sit when the Lakers come to play ( I'm such a super wife I buy him tickets every year)
I have a fear of heights for those that do not know that factoid. I have issues.... The first time I bought tickets to the lakers game I brought sewing with me.  By the time the basketball game was over I had an elephant sewn. The attendant of our section kept checking in on me to make sure in was okay and to see the progress of my elephant. Very nice I thought.
Our first concert......
My husband dressed down for this concert... He is wearing a flannel... He's adorkable.
So cute....
Our first concert.....

Sunshine Nellie on Etsy Lots of new goodness!

Yep!
Thats right folks in denile!!!
A lot of things have happned over the past week and i'd like to just rush this along and reboot on a different kind of path. Wish we could do that, life would be so much easier! Seriously.....
So, I have been busy working (pssh part time) and creating new items for the Etsy Shop! Find me here Sunshine Nellie on Etsy!  I have been trying really hard to get some things made.

I am relying on my Etsy again. Unfortunately some rocks have hit the perpetual blender and its time to try to make this into a smoothie!

Check my shop out if you haven't. I take a lot of pride in what I create and I really enjoy selling something that was made from my own two hands to someone that enjoys the feature and look of it as much as I did. There is so little made in the US of A it seems anymore that we are consumers of other parts of the world when we are hurting so bad here.

Imagine a world where people buy handmade and homegrown ONLY.. yes,the cost may be a little more but, what if these things were made from home grown fabric fibers and a small band of people created those wickedly adorable jeans your wearing? I would pay extra for a pair of jeans that helps our economy. I know of people that ONLY buy American made items..NO JOKE really..there are FEW and far in between of those folks in America  because, its hard to find stuff made here..

SO, Visist my shop you won't be let down

Been a while eh? True to the heart,Factual and actual life of a creative person and a complex personality.

I am facing a personality disorder today.
Getting into the funk of why I can't do things the way I want and how I want them done.
One of those moments where you feel really lost and really stuck you know?
So, anyone that has read my blog before knows, that I lost my full time job. I had money to go out here and there and to buy things I didn't necessarily need.
I went from a 4 digit a month income of my own to now.. 3... big diff...  HUGE DIFF actually.

Now,I am living within my means and i'm having a real hard time with the feeling.

I am a fabric addict, a crafting addict, a spontaneous gal that enjoys random trips to the coast and to see family. I can't do either of those now and that hurts..
It hurts my desire to be able to be free spirited and adventurous. It sucks.
Look for a new job you say? well, I have been and its been terribly hard because, I don't want to do what I was doing. I was making decent money but,I have gotten tired of the bit and working for a heartless company.
I have had phone calls from folks wanting to talk about the job I had applied for but really, those jobs wont get me any further than I am right now financially. It sucks. It sucks IT SUCKS IT SUCKS!

I MISS BEING FREE AND CRAZY!
 Now.... lets talk bussiness..
You know sometimes you buy things you don't need? things you don't HAVE to have? well, look at it this way. What would happen if you couldn't afford to own those new things? the iPad..the new laptop you put on your credit card? the gas for your new v6 vehicle (AHHH!!) its HARD
you have lost your financial ability to go out and about and feel human.
Being human is like the rest of America. Life is  passing you buy BECAUSE NOW you have a 3 digit income and you have a 4 digit bill every month...ACK!I didn't prepare myself well enough for somthing like this to happenPreperation is key. you are supposed to have at least 3 or 4 the times of monthly bills you have in a savings account for back up. I know people that have done this. Good for you! but, the "average" American has not...and much to my surprise (well not really, I was ready to move on) did not prepare....

Here I am. Working a part time job and scraping by.

I have had a day where I just want to scream at strangers and yell that I hate people for the way things have turned out but you know what? the only person to blame is me,myself, and I... yep...this here chick..I am to blame for my mistakes, me Fups and my fubars!
I am pissed of at ME...I pissed myself off today... and rightfully so.. it took me near 3 months to figure this out...to figure out that I needed to prepare my future better than I have... so, here I am craigslist daily and looking for somthing new.
I am a great persona, a fantastic person.. I have an outgoing personality and a bubbely spirit.. but sometimes I have my moments. I am HUMAN
I would rather stay home and sew today or go see my family. Help them brand the cows but... i'm going to a 5 hour shift ... I am thankful I have that income but, when I was 14 this isn't how my life was supposed to be. Far from it.
.....................Hold yourself accountable............... Make sure you plan.........look at the big picture...........and move on............

Ever see a "Mini" kitchen? .....welcome to my Apartment!

So, after a lot of thought and a lot of time spent in the kitchen since purchasing my KitchenAid Mixer...and some color inspiration from a gal pal that just moved..I decided it was time to updo my little..very little..kitchen.Unfortunetly,I do not have any before and after photos on hand so... I can just tell ya what i've done and how i've done it... Lets start with a "this is good as its going to get" Photo of the kitchen intself.

We have lived in this Apartment for going onto 3 years now. My husband, brother and myself..needless to say..can you see 3 people in this kitchen? Imagine one getting a cup of coffee, one making a sandwich and another at the oven frying an egg....get it??? Its really not fun! This kitchen is maybe 4 feet wide and 8 feet long.no joke. This photo was taken by me with my back against the "fake" wall (just a wall that stands to block the kitchen from the living room-which is large for an apartment) We have a total of 5 cupboards for storage. I put the shelf over the sink which originally I had a canvas print ..a coffee cafe motif ..I loved coffee so much I wanted my kitchen to be all coffee like..since we have these ugly press-board "wood" cupboards and brown lanolium...you need to improvise right?

I store my dry baking ingredients in 1 gallon vintage ball jars (I collect). I had ceramic canisters that were terribly hard to get clean, they were white. . Boring...white... meh... I used chalkboard vynel on the lids with a metallic paint marker to write what was in the jars..obviously sugar and flour are different in color in texture but.....ya know... OCD...

The wire wracks with hanging baskets are from IKEA...that store.... pshhh... Ive actually used them for the past 4 years now in this apartment and our last when things on the counter was just too much clutter. I pop these bad boys into the dishwasher and tada..good as new!
I was cooking breakfast this AM as I was snapping these photos. I hung the marigold tea towel and the tangerine towel on the bar of the oven to add a pop of color. I've asked "the boys" to not use them ..I pop them into the washer when I wash the rest of the kitchen towels. I am a lover of cast iron and vintage Wagner ware..they normally hang out on the stove :)

The wood tray on top of the microwave is from Ross. I paid $10.99 for it. I tried to thrift one or DIY one myself but..the price was cheaper and the style was a bit more me. I wanted to create a cleaner line rather than the stuff thrown on top of the microwave. This also helps from items sliding or falling off the microwave.
..if you store on your microwave like I do..counter space is very limited.

And theres my French Toast I was making..I use an electric skillet often for breakfast so it gets done quicker and I can use the stove for other things like bacon and potatoes..
I shoved my pink Kitchen aid mixer into the corner..I have plans of making a cover for it but...time..
Yes,we have two coffee pots. One is mine and one is my brothers..I am very protective and particular of my coffee...and my coffee pot.. My little 5 cupper.. My husband doesn't drink coffee from home...he's too good for that..Pinkies up... bwahahaha!
Do you see what I mean by counter space? this is what it looks like on a typical morning but,it is what it is..

It is a surface and it is available...so ta da! top of the fridge storage! A $2.99 Thrifted black storage box hides all the pans that get used routinely..because my brother has his own and my husband and I have our own set our main cupboard is FULL to the brim with pans. . . that is another DIY storage for another time.
Pardon my overfilled recycling bag... but, it tis OreyGon and we have to pay a deposit on cans..adds up..
This roller cart has 3 shelves and it is SUPER handy! my brother stores his rice cooker ..see the wire? on this cart and we collect our "go backs", store our plastic bags in a handy dandy IKEA Plastic Bag collector..

I like to DIY my own coffee and the syrups were taking space up on the counter so this nice basket now homes them..I have had this basket for YEARS.

These are my very own hand painted DIY wall art. Acrylic on canvas and sealed with varnish except the one on the far right.. I had wanted to try out chalkboard paint and tada! Memo Board..BAM there it be! I used masking tape to create the designs and goggled and researched trends. I didn't want to create a floral kitchen because I have a husband and a brother..my husband does not care because I am the cook of our marriage but,my brother may wine a bit.... I purchased the large matching frames from IKEA..oh THAT STORE!!! I decided on the sprig design simply because it could be considered a flower or an herb...cooky like.

After many-a-seaches on Pinterest... yeah addiction... and a little idea
The baskets came from Target and range from $$2.99-$9.99. But Online they come in 4 packs. I suggest the Med. Size those are the ones on the top two shelves.
I don't really have an organizing method here other than the top one is my dairy products and they all get frequently used..Especially my Coffee creamer that just so happens tom come in "Coffee Lovers" size bwahahaha! I love my ceramic Egg crate Cost Plus World Market..Gotta LOVE it $5.99

I DIY'd my shelf liners because they are easy to clean, decorative and make all those wobbly items not fall over. The oil cloth was $7.12  a yard  at Fabric Depot

The first item for my small kitchen update was this rug......... $5.99 at Ross.. its more of a utility like texture so it is super durable for the kitchen..yippie skippie..

I tried to pull colors out of the rug since it is a bit of a focal point for my kitchen...
So, all and all the kitchen looks messy but,the very limited space makes it a bit cluttered.. little by little progress is happening!

Here is my tutorial on how to make the WIRE rack covers..you can do this with plastic too BUT you don't need the snaps. Just trace your refrigerator racks and you can use double sided tape to keep the oilcloth down.

Plastic Snap kit. The tool comes separate. I purchased mine at Joann Fabrics The snaps come in rad colors I highly recommend for the frugal minded such as myself to wait until you get a few good coupons to purchase these as you'll end up becoming addicted. I ended up paying $10 for the pliers and $4 for the snaps (50% off coupons woot woot)

A super Duper Sharpie any color just make sure it does not bleed threw your oil cloth or seep.

Sharp Scissors

One of your fridge racks IF they are the same size.

1 yard of Oil Cloth for two shelves and the inside of your shelves if yours are completely closed in without a bar.
 So...here we go kids!!!!!!!
.......

1) Trace your shelves of your fridge. If you have ..we will call them trays for now..
if you have wire trays like I do.. you will need to trace 6- no larger than the width of your rack flaps to attach your eyelets to that will fold over and hook to the underside of your racks to keep the oil cloth from moving off the rack. ...see photo below. then begin to cut after you've traced out some flaps. Mine were not perfect AT ALL I just "winged" it for it being my first time and not looking at anyone's instructions.
Chop chop chop...
2) Once you have cut it all out we will now begin applying the snaps. Be careful, read the directions that come with the pliers because if you do not you will end up ruining your piece of oil cloth because once these are put into the hole and "crunched" down they are VERY hard to remove. The pointed tips of the flat backs will go easily into the oil cloth so go ahead.. Push them threw closest but,not too far away from the end of the flap..The flat back is always on the printed side of the oil cloth.
The center pointed piece is the center of the flat sided snap. and the part that squishes as you use the clamp.

Make sure the snaps are opposite..one flat piece
on each side of the snap per the instructions for general application.
See how my cuts aren't perfect..meh..no one is judging.  See how the snaps are opposite? one male one female..I hate that term! but... is what it is! Continue doing this until your all done. then place your fridge liners over your wire racks and bam! DONE!

Welp...thats what I got for now folks! more ideas to come later!

The Semi-housewife goes crazy! Follow my blog with Bloglovin

I'm now on BlogLovin too!

Deffinition of ME The Semi-Housewife:

- A gal who has lost her full time job with a company of 3 years and is now working VERY part time while figuring out her next big adventure and becoming a dotting wife to her husband..Cooks breakfast nearly daily, bakes cakes and desserts, cooks dinner on a near nightly basis. Cleans the house, does the laundry..that kinda thing... Paints her nails every other day ;-)

I have been off work the past 4 days and going a little stir crazy but, with the help of one of my best gals I was kept company after she got off work. We sat around, drinking wine, sewing and "not" watching movies and gossiping..

My little family and I (my brother, husband and myself..) visited family in Goldendale,Washington on Sunday to Monday evening and relaxed.

It is always a joy to go visit family. They live "far" away - an hours and a little drive. Especially when it is gorgeous! Seems like life gets in the way sometimes and makes it hard to go visit.

I have been baking like a silly sally...Cakes....breads....cookies.....all kinds of goodness! My KitchenAid Mixer has became essential in my abilities in the kitchen (that doesn't sound right huh?)

I love the splash guard...I thought it was silly..until I put that bad boy on full blast and wisked the crap out of the cake batter for this.......

PEPPERMINT CHOCOLATE CAKE

It looks like a huge mess does it not?? I used two 8 inch cake pans to make a two layer. I smeared hot, melty pepperment frosting goodness in the center before sandwhiching it togeather. BUT the bottom cake crumbled  after I released it from the pan..SO i slyly acted as if it never happned..patted,smooshed and put it back together like humpty dumpty. The top cake was just fine. Your supposed to apply the frosting to the cake when the cake is hot...so that is where the lava effect came from.
I even got to use my Kromex Cake Pan........

The recipe is not mine, It belongs to The Pioneer Woman Ree  and lets just say...its calorie free..guilt free..carb free...sugar free..pretty nasty ;-) (just joshin')
As a side note:::::: I used a WHOLE BAG of york pepperment patties for this cake. 21 candies to be exact and that is what was in the bag..just so happened to be JUST enough for the recipe.

The cast iron skillet Nicholas (husband) and I found at the coast the weekend before my termination at the full time job I no longer feel STRESSED about having (long story) has became my sidekick! I have baked in that bad boy and of course made some pretty freaking fantastic meals!
Banannas Foster another recipe from The Pioneer Woman
You pour this goodness over ice cream. My fav. brand because it isn't thick and nasty like the "cheap" brands is Tillamook,Vanilla Bean... just so happens to be almost "local" too :)

Random but,its been on our agenda for a little bit...we rearranged out livingroom..this is a mess but, were pretty proud..

The furry thing in that kennel/crate over straight ahead is my fluffy butt rabbit Gypsee.. one of the loves of my life... shes such a pain in the arse.

I re-upholstered our $10 Ottoman..

Kinda shabby but, it is what it is!
My husband rehomed a PINK recliner!
I made him the Mustache pillow... the back of the pillow is ...............................................................................................................................chevron!

I dyed my hair a red...Because I have natural red tones already..and bright blue eyes..and im pale...so..

<------------Before-----After^^
I purchase my hair dye from Sally Beauty Supply's Website  (I
go to the actual brick store) and mix my own.. its cheaper and a MUCH MUCH better quality than already boxed stuff that I have to buy two of every time because my hair is thick and long.
This brand is for dark headed peoples! "Red Hot" was my color choice. I used a 30 Developer.

I finally got MY (My if my husbands reading..he bought them for ME but keeps claiming"They are mine,i'm going to put little plants in them.." ya right!) Vintage Blue Ball Jars ..they shipped them in a HUGE box!
I am a little bit of a collector but,I actually use them compared to some folks that just hoard them :)

Welp, that's what I got today... I hope you all are having a great weekend!
